beaucourt

This organ, the sixty-ninth instrument made by Friedrich Goll (Lucerne), was installed in the Catholic church of Beaucourt in 1888.
At the time, the inhabitants of Beaucourt could be justifiably proud of what was an extremely well made organ of outstanding quality.  Several decades later, however, in 1940, work was carried out in order to please changing tastes, the official reason given being the improvement of the organ’s tonal scheme.  Goll’s original work was partly destroyed and completed by adding material of very poor quality from various other instruments.  The builder employed quite radical and unduly hasty methods, seriously damaging all the instruments on which he worked.
The aim of our recent work was to restore the organ’s musical qualities and to make the best possible use of the materials added in 1940 with such little respect for common sense and conflicting with the fundamental principles of mechanical action.  The pipework added in 1940, although originally from a number of instruments, is of good quality.  The Beaufort organ is known to contain pipes made for Cavaillé-Coll’s chancel organ at Poligny, some by Callinet from the west organ at Mâcon as well as material from a still unidentified instrument.  While not being able to work miracles, I think that after many attempts I have managed to achieve a certain degree of tonal unity in the instrument.
